Portraits Botaniques de l’Océan Indien
Whispers of White est née de mon regard sur les plantes qui accompagnent le quotidien et façonnent les paysages des îles de l’océan Indien. J’ai choisi de peindre le portrait de cinq d’entre elles, reliées par un même fil : celui de leurs fleurs blanches.
Chaque plante raconte une histoire différente. Au-delà de sa fidélité botanique, j’ai voulu révéler la personnalité propre à chacune d’elles.
À travers ces aquarelles, j’ai cherché à associer la rigueur de l’illustration botanique à une interprétation plus sensible : la force tranquille de la pervenche, la ligne libre de l’ipomée, la floraison généreuse du tabernaemontana, la géométrie sauvage de la leucas et la lumière délicate du jasmin.
Botanical Portraits from the Indian Ocean
Whispers of White grew from my fascination with the plants that shape both the everyday life and the landscapes of the Indian Ocean islands. I chose to paint the portraits of five of them, united by a single thread: their white flowers.
Each plant tells a different story. Beyond botanical accuracy, I wanted to reveal the unique character and presence of each one.
Through these watercolours, I sought to combine the rigour of botanical illustration with a more personal interpretation: the quiet strength of the periwinkle, the graceful line of the morning glory, the generous bloom of the tabernaemontana, the wild geometry of the leucas, and the delicate light of the jasmine.

Catharanthus roseus
La Pervenche de Madagascar s’élève avec une détermination tranquille, à l’image de la Grande Île dont elle est originaire. Ses tiges se dressent vers la lumière tandis que ses fleurs blanches émergent délicatement entre les feuilles.
Commune dans les jardins de l’océan Indien, elle passe souvent inaperçue. Pourtant, derrière son apparente simplicité se cache une plante d’une remarquable résilience. J’ai choisi d’en révéler la force discrète, en la représentant dans son port naturel.
Silent Rise évoque cette élévation silencieuse : celle d’une plante familière qui, sans jamais s’imposer, trouve toujours son chemin vers la lumière.
The Madagascar periwinkle rises with quiet determination, reflecting the spirit of the island from which it originates. Its stems reach towards the light while its white flowers emerge delicately among the leaves.
Common throughout gardens across the Indian Ocean, it often goes unnoticed. I wanted to look at it differently, revealing the quiet strength that lies behind its apparent simplicity by portraying it in its natural habit.
Silent Rise evokes this gentle upward movement: that of a familiar plant which grows with quiet resilience and naturally finds its way towards the light.

Ipomoea obscura
L’ipomée trace librement son chemin, portée par une tige fine qui s’enroule, se déploie et semble dessiner dans l’espace. Ses feuilles en forme de cœur rythment son mouvement tandis que ses fleurs blanches s’ouvrent avec légèreté.
Commune dans les paysages tropicaux de l’océan Indien, elle grimpe, enlace et explore l’espace avec une grâce naturelle. J’ai choisi de suivre cette ligne vivante sans la contraindre, en laissant la plante guider librement la composition.
Line of Grace évoque ce fil délicat et sinueux : une ligne continue qui relie chaque feuille et chaque fleur dans un même mouvement.
The morning glory finds its own path, carried by a slender stem that twists, unfolds and seems to draw through space. Its heart-shaped leaves set the rhythm of its movement, while its white flowers open with effortless lightness.
Common throughout the tropical landscapes of the Indian Ocean, it climbs, entwines and explores its surroundings with natural grace. I chose to follow this living line without constraining it, allowing the plant to guide the composition.
Line of Grace evokes this delicate, winding thread: a continuous line that connects each leaf and flower in one flowing movement.

Tabernaemontana divaricata
Le tabernaemontana déploie une floraison généreuse au cœur d’un feuillage dense et lumineux. Ses fleurs blanches émergent discrètement entre les feuilles, jusqu’à transformer peu à peu la plante en une constellation de lumière.
J’ai voulu préserver cet équilibre entre abondance et délicatesse, en laissant le rythme naturel des branches guider la composition.
Softly in Bloom évoque cette floraison qui s’installe progressivement, sans ostentation, jusqu’à révéler toute la richesse de la plante.
Tabernaemontana unfolds its generous flowering among dense, luminous foliage. Its white blossoms emerge quietly between the leaves, gradually transforming the plant into a constellation of light.
I wanted to preserve this balance between abundance and delicacy, allowing the natural rhythm of the branches to guide the composition.
Softly in Bloom evokes a flowering that unfolds gently, without ostentation, gradually revealing the plant’s quiet richness.

Leucas lavandulifolia
Le leucas se déploie librement en un réseau de tiges fines ponctuées de petites fleurs blanches. Réunies autour des tiges, elles forment de délicats éclats de lumière qui semblent flotter dans la composition comme autant de petites étoiles.
J’ai choisi de préserver son allure spontanée, presque indisciplinée, tout en révélant la structure discrète qui organise cette apparente liberté.
Wild Constellation évoque cette géométrie sauvage : une constellation végétale dessinée par le rythme des tiges, des feuilles et des fleurs.
Leucas spreads freely through a network of slender stems, punctuated by clusters of small white flowers. Gathered around the stems, they create delicate points of light that seem to float through the composition like a constellation of tiny stars.
I wanted to preserve its spontaneous, almost untamed appearance while revealing the subtle structure that lies behind its apparent freedom.
Wild Constellation evokes this wild geometry: a botanical constellation shaped by the rhythm of stems, leaves and flowers.
Falling Light

Jasminum nummulariifolium
Le jasmin se déploie en une cascade souple de tiges et de feuilles, jusqu’à l’éclosion de ses fleurs blanches. Suspendues à l’extrémité des rameaux, elles semblent porter la lumière avec elles, tandis que les fruits sombres viennent rythmer la composition.
J’ai voulu préserver ce mouvement délicat, en laissant la plante guider naturellement la composition et conserver toute la légèreté de son port.
Falling Light évoque cette lumière qui semble glisser doucement à travers les branches, comme portée par les fleurs elles-mêmes.
Jasmine unfolds in a graceful cascade of stems and leaves, ending in the delicate bloom of its white flowers. Suspended at the tips of the branches, they seem to carry the light with them, while the dark fruits bring rhythm and balance to the composition.
I wanted to preserve this delicate movement, allowing the plant to guide the composition naturally while maintaining the lightness of its natural habit.
Falling Light evokes the gentle light that seems to drift through the branches, as if carried by the flowers themselves.

Réunies, ces cinq plantes composent un paysage botanique à la fois familier et singulier. Le blanc de leurs fleurs devient un fil conducteur, une lumière discrète qui circule d’une œuvre à l’autre, de Silent Rise à Falling Light.
Avec Whispers of White, j’ai souhaité porter un regard nouveau sur ces plantes si familières qu’elles finissent parfois par se fondre dans le paysage. Pourtant, chacune possède son propre caractère, son rythme et sa manière d’habiter l’espace. À travers ces cinq portraits, j’ai voulu révéler leur personnalité et rendre hommage à la richesse du patrimoine végétal de l’océan Indien.
Together, these five plants create a botanical landscape that is both familiar and distinctive. The white of their flowers becomes a common thread, a quiet light that flows from one painting to the next, from Silent Rise to Falling Light.
With Whispers of White, I wanted to offer a fresh perspective on plants that are so familiar they often fade into the background. Yet each possesses its own character, rhythm and way of inhabiting space. Through these five botanical portraits, I sought to reveal their quiet beauty and celebrate the richness of the Indian Ocean’s botanical heritage.
